A) Modismos con verbos separables: si el complemento de objeto directo es un sustantivo, éste puede colocarse antes o después del adverbio.

Ejemplos:

BRUSH OFF / Rechazar

a) The reporters asked several questions about the crime, but the police brushed the reporters off.
(Zde ripórters askd séveral kuéstions abáut zde kráim, bat zde polis brashd zde ripórters óf)
Los reporteros hicieron muchas preguntas sobre el crimen, pero la policía los rechazó.

CUT OUT / Recortar, dejar de hacer (algo).

a) Susan liked the photo of her favorite movie actor, so she cut it out of the magazine.
(Súsan láikd zde fóuto of jer féivorit áktor, sóu shi kat it áut of zde mágasin)
A Susan le gustó la foto de su actor favorito y la recortó de la revista.

b) Todd´s little sister was bothering him, so he told her to “cut it out.”
(Tods litel sister uós bózdering jim, sóu ji told jer tu kat it áut)
La hermanita de Todd lo estaba molestando, así que él le dijo que dejara de hacerlo.

CUT UP / Dividir

a) The bank robbers cut the money up equally, and said goodbye to each other.

LEAVE ON / Dejar prendido (a) (la luz, el televisor, etc)

a) I left on the kitchen lights on all night.

LET OUT / Dejar salir, ajustar (la ropa para subirle la talla o hacerla más amplia)

a) I let the dogs out of the house so they could play.

Dejé salir los perros de la casa para que pudieran jugar.

b) When one gains a lot of weight, it is necessary to let ones clothes out.

Cuando alguien sube mucho de peso, es necesario ajustar alguna ropa.

B) Modismos con verbos inseparables: si el complemento de objeto directo es un sustantivo o un pronombre, debe colocarse inmediatamente después de la preposición o el adverbio.

Ejemplos:

BRUSH UP ON / Repasar

a) Before I travel to Italy, I am going to brush up on my Italian.
(Bifór ái travel tu Ítali, ái am góing tu brásh áp on mái itálian)
Antes de ir a Italia, voy a repasar mi italiano.

CUT BACK / Disminuir

a) The ABC Company has cut back its production of women´s shoes.
(Zde ei bi si kómpani jas kát bák its prodakshon of uímens shus)
La compañía ABC ha disminuido su producción de zapatos de mujer.

CUT OFF / Cortar (eliminar), cortar (electricidad)

a) My parents finally cut off my allowance.
(Mái párents fáinali kat óf mái alóuans)
Mis padres finalmente cortaron mi mensualidad.

b) If you don´t pay your electric bill, the power company will cut off your service.
(If yu dóunt péi yuár eléktrik bil, zde páuer kómpani uil kát of yuár sérvis)
Si no pagas tu recibo de luz, la compañía de electricidad te cortará el servicio.

GO THROUGH / Soportar, examinar

a) John said he couldn´t go through another experience like that one again.

b) Doctor Johnson went through all of the many results trying to conclude his patient´s diagnosis.
